Our New Community Petanque Courts Are Ready!

October 31, 2016
Very often during the course of the summer, the members of the New Suffolk Petanque club discussed how wonderful it would be to have a home court, free of pebbles, big rocks and holes. We looked at the possibilities available in New Suffolk and came up with the idea that our beautiful ball field might be the place. We approached the New Suffolk School Board and the Enrichment Fund, the idea of a court on the ballfield was very well received. Members of our club had been in touch with Mr. Finnican, Physical Education teacher, to discuss the possibility of giving workshops for the students “How to play Petanque”. After all, Petanque is a sport on the future list of Summer Olympics. It did not take long for the enthusiastic players to rally and raise the funds to cover THE ENTIRE COST OF THE COURTS.

On Monday October 24, a group of players with the help of Carlos Giron, a local landscaper, broke the ground. Club members continue to work for 3 consecutive days and by Wednesday October 27, the work was completed.

This project would have never been realized without the support of the New Suffolk School Board Members:
Toni Dill, Jason Cooper and Joe Polashock, the Members of the Enrichment Fund: Jeanette Cooper, Brooke Dailey and Nicole Szymzack and the New Suffolk Civic Association. Many thanks to Paul Cacioppo, Joe Polashock, John Doherty, Joe Konchalski and Patrick Dailey for their help and expertise. What a team you are! And thanks to all the Petanque players who showed up on cold, windy days to help. United we built! This is how our Community works! Finally, we would like to thank Bob and Judy Goldman for the beautiful picnic tables and benches that they donated for the field.

The cold season may slow us down and a few of our passionate players are gone for the winter, however a group of us, weather permitting intends to play during the winter months. Our New Suffolk United Petanque Club is open to everyone, young and old can play Petanque! So, contact Michelle at mroussan@optimum.net if you wish to join us.

With friendship and gratitude,
The New Suffolk United Petanque Club
